A radioimmunoassay measures the concentration of an antigen, or a substance that the body identifies as foreign, in the blood. During a radioimmunoassay, a researcher prepares a mixture of radioactively labeled antigens and their corresponding antibodies, or blood proteins that the body produces in response to antigens. The antibodies bind to the radioactively labeled antigens in the mixture. Then, the researcher adds a biological sample containing the patient’s antigens to the mixture. The unlabeled patient antigens bind to the antibodies and displace the radioactive antigens. Then, the researcher removes all unbound antigens, labeled and unlabeled, from the mixture. The researcher measures the radioactivity of the remaining bound antigens to indirectly determine the concentration of bound unlabeled patient antigens.en_US
